Ghost ants are a tropical species well established in Florida and considered one of the state’s most common structural pest ants. In Northwest Florida, they are frequently found inside homes and businesses, especially in kitchens, bathrooms, pantries, and other areas where they forage for food and water.
Although ghost ants do not damage wood or pose a serious threat to people, they can become a persistent nuisance once they begin nesting indoors.
Ghost ants are easy to overlook because much of their body is pale and difficult to see against light-colored surfaces.
Workers measure about 1/16 inch long.
The head and thorax are dark brown to black, while the abdomen and legs are pale yellow, milky white, or nearly transparent.
Ghost ants have a narrow waist and a very small, delicate-looking body.
Their antennae are bent or elbowed.
Reproductive ghost ants may have two pairs of wings, although homeowners are much more likely to notice wingless workers indoors.
Their two-tone appearance is the most useful identifying feature. On pale countertops, sinks, and tile, the translucent abdomen and legs can be difficult to see, making the dark head look as though it is moving by itself. Like odorous house ants, ghost ants also give off a coconut-like odor when crushed, although this is not usually how homeowners identify them.
Ghost ant activity in Northwest Florida is generally highest from March through October, when warmer temperatures support steady foraging and colony growth. Activity drops from November through February as cooler conditions in the western Panhandle limit outdoor movement. During winter, colonies may survive in heated indoor spaces, but sightings are usually less frequent and limited to occasional scouts.
